Wellness is like a number line. Remember the number line from grade school? A horizontal line with small vertical hash marks, a zero in the middle with negative numbers to the left of zero and positive numbers to the right. With regard to wellness when you are at a zero you don’t have a disease, but you are just one point away from a diagnosis. Negative is disease and the more negative the worse the disease. And positive is wellness and the more positive the further you are away from negative 1, where disease begins. Our goal has to be to get as far to the right of this number line as possible. But the question is how to we do that and how do we measure this thing wellness?
Measuring wellness is the tricky part. It’s easy to know where you are on the negative side of the number line. A cold is a little negative and cancer is a lot negative. But how do you tell where you are on the positive side? If you’re not sick you are at least a zero. But how do you tell if you are a 5, or a 10, or a 20. You could use weight, body fat, or cholesterol, but they mostly relate to heart disease. Skinny and fit people get sick too. As it turns out there is a growing body of evidence that a chemical in your blood called thiol is just the thing we are looking for to measure your wellness.
Thiols are a group of chemicals that are your front-line anti-oxidants. They bind and help get rid of oxidative chemicals or free radicals and, therefore, help to prevent genetic mutation, cellular aging, and all kinds of diseases. The higher your thiol levels, the more well you are, and the further you are to the right on our number line. Just like in the infomercial, but wait, there’s more. Inflammation.
The chemistry of inflammation has the opposite effect of thiols on your body. They are bad for you, they are oxidizing, and increase the risk of many diseases. So while you want your thiol levels to be high, you want your inflammation levels to be low. And the lower they are, again the more well you are and the further you are to the right on the wellness number line. So how do you get your thiol levels high and your inflammation levels low?
According to the 2005 study that we discussed in last weeks article, “Faith and Thiol”, we know that chiropractic adjustments to reduce subluxation over the course of 2+ years does more than any other treatment or modality or life-style to raise thiol levels above those of control subjects regardless of diet and supplementation. We also know that correcting subluxation reduces spinal inflammation more substantially and for greater periods of time than any other method. We realize that wellness is much more than being subluxation-free, but reducing subluxation does things to your body that nothing else does. It is the logical place to start. So this is why we have Reconstructive Care to correct subluxation beyond pain relief and why we have Wellness Care so that the body can realize the long-term changes from being subluxation-free or as subluxation-free as we can get. And it is why we spend so much time teaching our patients about wellness. Getting you as far to the right on the wellness number line is our imperative.
