Therapeutics – Definition: related to the treatment of disease or disorders.
The medical model is based upon the above definition. Medicine is about treating diseases and disorders. There is nothing inherently bad with such an idea. There is honor in helping someone to recover from disease. The bad comes in to play when we regard the tools that the medicine uses in its therapeutics, which are drugs and surgery. Since we know that the practice of medicine is the 3rd leading cause of death then I feel compelled to make sure you understand not only what therapeutics is, but its relationship to what we do here in this office.
Vertebral subluxation complex is not a disease or a disorder. It is not something that one needs curing from. Rather it is a neuro-mechanical disruption of the spine and the related nervous system. It is damage to spinal joints that is resulting in a communication breakdown in the nerve system. Yes, it may lead to pain when the damage is severe enough. Yes, it will lead to spinal degeneration when you have had it long enough. But it is the communication breakdown that is our primary concern.
With that background let’s play out a possible scenario. Let’s pretend that it is a Monday and you have no subluxation. Then on Tuesday you incur subluxation from a significant injury such as a fall or car crash. Now you have nerve interference. It is unlikely that this interference will result in a disease or a disorder on Wednesday, or even Thursday. But what about a year from Wednesday, or two years, or a decade… Is it possible that disease will eventually result from that subluxation in your future? Science says most definitely yes, through a variety of mechanisms but all based on a disruption in your computer’s networking system.
Therapeutics would dictate that you wait until the disease or disorder develops, then treat it, either with drugs or with surgery. This is the dangerous practice of medicine. Non-therapeutics would dictate that you correct the original cause of the above scenario’s disease, which was the subluxation that occurred a decade or more ago. So, when we work to correct subluxation it is non-therapeutic. It is done to prevent rather than to treat. As it is said, chiropractic treats the person, not the disease.
