When scar tissue heals the cut or the wound or the injury it is our friend, but in the case of subluxation you will see it is our bitter enemy, wanting to deny us the mobility, agility, motion, and health that we so wantonly seek as we age, but so take for granted when we are young. Although technically speaking scar tissue is a non-elastic sticky protein called collagen that can span across the microscopic gaps of an injury to fill in the missing space when tissue is damaged or torn, I rather think of it as the gristle in a tough piece of steak. It is tough and stiff and rigid, and while you need it you want as little as possible of it. And here’s the important rule, wherever there is inflammation in the body, scar tissue is being made right there to “heal” that area of the body. In the context of chiropractic, where there are painful spots on the subluxation exam, scar tissue is being produced there 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and binding that area of the spine and fusing in the subluxation forever. This is the legacy of subluxation.
To change directions for a minute, you can’t see electricity. Nor can you touch it or taste it or hear it. But you can measure its effects simply by turning on the light. When the light goes on you have electricity. When it doesn’t you don’t. Simple. Similarly, I can’t see or feel the scar tissue production in your spine but I can measure its effects. Range of motion, tender spots, tight muscle fibers. In other words, our subluxation examination. This is why my goal with every patient is to zero out the exam, to try to improve the function of the spine to the point that we can find no evidence of inflammation anywhere. Because wherever there is inflammation, there is scar tissue.
We have all cut ourselves and seen just how fast the scar tissue heals a cut. It’s amazing!! But imagine if that cut healed and then kept on healing making more and more scar tissue until the scar was huge and grotesque, blotting out the normal skin. This is exactly the effect of subluxation on the spine. A never ending supply of scar tissue in the ligaments, tendons, and muscles around the spine turning the joint into an ugly mess that will sooner or later lead to pain, degeneration, bone spurs, possibly disability and, as in last weeks article, damage to your breaker box and therefore your health.
This is one of the several reasons why it is my purpose with every single patient to correct the subluxation as much as I can. If you want less than full correction that’s unfortunate but it is entirely up to you and all you need to do is let me know. Until that day, however, I have an ethical obligation to do all that needs to be done.
