# 4 I'm Not As Dumb As I Look

The human body is an amazing and amazingly intricate organism that is so complicated that no computer made by man could duplicate its structure, let alone its function.  There are trillions or more cells, each one with a job to do.  Its job is to do what needs to be done for the benefit of every other cell in the body.  And when all cells do their job you have balance, health, maximum human performance, in short, your genetic potential.  Let’s assume there are some 100 trillion cells in the body.  To put that into perspective if there are 7 billion people on Earth, it would take 15,000 planet Earths to give you the same number of people as we have cells in your body.  Now imagine a system whereby every one of these humans could communicate with every other at every moment so that they could all do what needs to be done for the greater good.  That would be some amazing cell phone service, wouldn’t it?  No dropped calls.

Not only do we have that cell phone system in the human body, but we have the operating system to run it.  The phone system is the nervous system and the operating system is what chiropractors call Innate Intelligence.  Our creator imparted an intelligence within each of us whose sole job is to read the ever changing internal and external environments and alter our cellular function on a moment to moment basis to maintain equilibrium, balance, or homeostasis.  When we are in balance, we are healthy, we can perform at our best, and our genetic potential is realized.  When we are out of balance, we are weak, we get sick, and ultimately, we die.

By definition, Innate Intelligence is perfect.  It needs no help to perform its moment to moment miracles, just no interference.  However, despite Innate’s perfection, it has to work with an imperfect thing, the human body.  We are made of physical matter, carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, etc.  Matter is limited and subject to the continual attack of the forces of the universe such as time, wind, temperature, gravity, radiation, and chemistry.  That matter which makes up our body must return to its origin in time.  However, in the meantime our Innate is molding and utilizing these same forces to counter the outside forces to maintain our balance.  It is a precarious edge that we sit upon, and for that reason constant vigilance must be applied.

What if, for example, there is interference to the Innate or the forces of Innate?  That’s simple; we will be out of balance resulting in malfunction, dis-ease, disease, and death.  How then, could there be interference to Innate?  To answer that question requires a short anatomy lesson.  Connecting these 100 trillion cells are the branches of the nervous system running from the brain, through the spinal cord, and out the peripheral nerves to the cells and back again.  The nerves bring information, commands, and nutrients from brain to cell, from cell to brain, and from cell to cell.  The brain is housed and protected by the bony skull.  The peripheral nerves in the body are well protected by their own insulation.  However, the very fragile nerves as they leave the spinal column are extremely sensitive to pressure from the slightest misalignment or spinal malfunction.  When you have this malfunction, what we call Vertebral Subluxation Complex (VSC) this is the point where there will be interference to Innate.

VSC is the result of past traumas, injuries, and what can be called VSC events.  A VSC event is anytime there is trauma, micro-trauma, or postural trauma to the spine.  When one thinks of childhood, there are literally thousands of the VSC events, from the birth process to the falls while learning to walk and run, to falls off slides, monkey bars, sports injuries, etc.  The list is as long as your memory of childhood.  Each event will cause inflammation and then scar tissue but most will be without symptoms.  Some of the scar tissue is left behind resulting in loss of function and misalignment, or VSC.  VSC is, therefore, a condition of childhood and grows in permanently by adulthood.  It is added to in adulthood by car accidents, repetitive jobs, and more injuries.  It is usually without symptoms until middle age.  And by then it has often progressed into degeneration, disc herniation, and spinal arthritis.  But its biggest tragedy is the damage to Innate.

When Innate is blocked or impaired or prevented otherwise from performing its miracles, illness and loss of performance will always result.  Perhaps not today, but eventually.  What type of illness?  What performance?  Everyone you can think of.  Disease always results from the inability of the body to properly interpret the environment and change physiology to adapt successfully.  Ultimately it is the only cause of disease.  And therefore the only cure is for the body to regain that ability to bring itself back into homeostasis, balance, or equilibrium.  VSC plays the key role in this process.

Therefore, the chiropractor’s only job is to adjust the spine to do his or her best to correct VSC as much as possible to facilitate the ability of Innate to properly reach every cell in the body.  The younger the patient, the better the results.  The less time that VSC has been actively reducing the work of Innate the less permanent damage there can be.

In conclusion, chiropractic is a philosophy, a science, and an art.  It is the philosophy of Innate Intelligence, it is the science of the Vertebral Subluxation Complex, and the Art of the adjustment.  It is well said that nature needs not help, just no interference to allow the unfolding of her miracles.  Innate is a miracle, the body is miraculous, and genetic potential unfolds when there is no impedance to the work of the miracle over the miraculous.  This is health from the inside-out.  True health cannot be bought in a bottle or a capsule.  It cannot be obtained from the outside-in approach of modern or what is called crash medicine.  It is within you waiting to be let out, and the sooner the better.

#3 The Perfect Patient - Not The Burn Victim

2/27/2014

Perfection is a state that none of us can achieve, but yet perfection lies within each of us.  God has given you a gift that is perfect that we chiropractors call the INNATE INTELLIGENCE.  Your INNATE is unique to you and cares only for you.  It is not the soul but it may be part of it.  It is the wisdom of life from God that molds the forces of the universe to make our imperfect bodies function and perform as close to perfect as can be.  INNATE is the guiding light who’s single goal is to guide every cell of your body to do exactly as is needed for every other cell.  For it just takes one cell to damage or kill the tissue, the organ, the system, the body, and the mind.  So although we cannot achieve it, still perfection must be our goal.  It is mine.  But how can we ever get close if we are covered with the scars of the 3rd degree burn victim?

See the skin of the 3rd degree burn victim in your mind’s eye.  It is disfigured, taught, shiny, pock marked, and distorted.  If on the face it can make the victim appear almost non-human.  The scarring of the burn victim is such a tragedy and it is forever, at least forever in his/her life.  This is what scar tissue is.  And it is this very same scar tissue that heals our spine after every subluxation event or injury.  The birth process, when we fall while learning to walk, falling off the changing table, climbing out of the crib, falling off the bike, the skateboard, the monkey bars, trees, athletic injuries, and car crashes.  Not to mention the daily stress of gravity and poor posture, repetitive motion at work, school  and play.  Our spines are subjected to an uncountable number of subluxation events beginning from the time we take our first breath.  By the time we are adults, we are the spinal equivalent to the burn victim.

Our spines are subject to the combined process of inflammation/scar tissue continuously throughout our lives.  By the time we are an adult, and certainly a middle ager, our spines are replete with scar tissue, the very same scar tissue as in the above burn victim.  This creates permanent subluxation, permanent misalignment, permanent loss of motion, and permanent nerve interference.  And it is this last part that is the true tragedy of the subluxation.  The nerve interference that blocks the gift of INNATE from truly being able to carry out its commands and orders from cell to cell, for without free nerve flow of mental impulses, cells malfunction, tissues break down, organs slow, and organ systems slowly fail, leading to dis-ease, disease, and death.  This sounds tragic and it is.  But there is a glimmer of hope.  Perfection is just around the corner, but maybe not for us, the burn victim.

You see, weekly chiropractic adjustments can break some of the scar tissue, can restore some of the alignment and function, can reduce some of the nerve interference.  And who knows, with INNATE being as perfect as it is, maybe it only needs a little help to perform the miracles that it can do.  Maybe we don’t need our spines to be truly subluxation-free to achieve maximum human health and performance.  It is worth the try, and try I will.  I didn’t start chiropractic care until I was already the burn victim, just like you.  But I will continue to be adjusted to break down the old, to prevent the new, to express as much of God’s INNATE as I can, but I, and you, are not the perfect patient.

No, the perfect patient is the one who is never the burn victim, who goes through life without subluxation, who never has the permanent damage from the list of traumas and subluxation events as discussed above.  No…the perfect patient is not the bubble boy, who is wrapped in bubble wrap and rolled around, never falling, never injured, and therefore, never living.  No… the perfect patient is the one who is checked every week from birth to death, and especially after each potential subluxation event.  The baby that grows without, or with little, subluxation, who never becomes the burn victim, like you and I, that is the perfect patient.  But he is not perfect in the sense that you probably think.

I am not talking about being the perfect patient for a chiropractor, although that is true.  My perfect patient is the newborn, who is checked each week, adjusted when needed and especially after each subluxation event.  But that is not the correct use of the word perfect.  No, I refer to the perfection that INNATE can perform on this child.  You see, the way I view it is since INNATE is perfect (it must be since it is an arm of GOD) and since INNATE knows just what to do at every moment of life, then it stands that if INNATE is being allowed to perform more, with less interference in the un-subluxated baby, then this baby will be the closest to perfect as can be.  He is born with a genetic potential and the only way that genetic potential can be maximized is for there to never be any interference to that potential from birth to death.  This is the perfect chiropractic patient who is also perfect.

#2 Genetic Health

2/27/2014

Life is amazing.  How could it be an accident?  You were first created when a sperm and an egg came together to form a single cell.  This cell had all the genetic material and intelligence to create all of you.  This cell doubled and doubled again over and over until there was a ball of identical cells, a blastocyst as it is called.  Very soon one cell decided for some unknown miracle of a reason that it needed to specialize.  How this one cell knew what it was supposed to become is still a mystery to the all knowing god of science.  But it knew.  So it changed into a nerve cell and became the nerve system.  Another cell became the liver, the kidneys, skin, eyes, tongue, and on and on and on for every type of specialized cell in your body.  And it happens perfect every time as long as there is no interference.  Life is truly amazing and the God given inborn or innate intelligence that runs our fragile body is absolutely perfect.

Fast forward to full maturity and birth.  Now you are in the real world, no longer protected by the barrier of the placenta.  You spend a life-time exposed to the dangers of the outside, to bacteria, viruses, toxins, time, and gravity.  Of these this essay is about toxins.  Toxins from the environment are inhaled, ingested, injected (vaccines), and absorbed by all of us.  They often form a chemical called a free radical.  A free radical is a highly reactive chemical that just wants to combine with something, anything.  It roams around the inside of your cells looking for a biochemical victim, and whatever it touches it destroys.  And if it joins with a strand of DNA it can cause a mutation.  We’ve all seen X-Men and have in our minds the comic book version of mutation.  Most mutations are probably inconsequential.  No mutations make you invisible or able to fly.  Some mutations will lead to cancer and/or a variety of other diseases and accelerated aging.  Free radicals are bad.

The good news is that your body can deal with free radicals by either binding them and expelling them or by repairing the genetic damage after it occurs.  How efficiently your body is at doing these two things will directly impact your future health, disease status and aging.  There are every day behaviors that help to increase your efficiency such as exercise, proper diet, relaxation, rest, and supplements.  All the things we know we should do but often don’t.  But there is more.

A scientist, Dr. Ronald Pero Ph.D., did research in this area for many years and developed simple blood tests that could tell how good each test subject was at performing these life-saving tasks.  Through his testing he concluded that life-style had a profound and direct impact on the preventing and repairing genetic damage from free radicals.  In short, he found that subjects with confirmed cases of cancer did these tasks poorly, obviously.  He found that a group of subjects in a breast cancer prevention program did the best overall due to there wellness approach to diet and exercise.  And he found that the average Joe was somewhere in the middle.  This was ground breaking in that he proved at a biochemical level that a person’s behavior directly impacts cellular function, health, and therefore quality and quantity of life.  And he also found out exactly how behavior changes body physiology and biochemistry.

Dr. Pero became a chiropractic patient due to low back problems and wondered whether chiropractic adjustments and reduction in subluxation would have any effect in his area of study.  So, over the next several months, he tested 107 chiropractic patients ranging in age from 21 to 59.  As with all my patients, they were all over the spectrum in terms of exercise level, dietary habits, supplement usage, smoker/non-smoker, etc.  However, the one thing they each had in common was that they had been under regular weekly chiropractic care for a minimum of five years.  The idea is that while it only takes a few weeks of adjustments to relieve pain, it will take many months of weekly adjustments to correct the subluxation and perhaps several years for complete neurological healing.  Fives years is probably enough for true health.

Dr. Pero was amazed at the results.  The cancer patients of course did the worse, so for the sake of this article let us say that they prevented and repaired genetic mutation at a level of 1X.  Using this 1X as a baseline, the women in the breast cancer prevention program out performed the cancer subjects by double, calling it 2X.  Average Joe was right in the middle at 1-1/2X.  Again this means that how you prevent and repair genetic mutation has a direct correlation to whether you will get cancer.  It also means that your behavior in terms of health habits directly effects your likelihood of having genetic mutation that will lead to cancer.  As far as the chiropractic group, all 107 of them tested the same, which turned out to be 4X.  In other words, their ability to prevent and repair genetic mutation was twice as good as the good group.  With the simple act of being adjusted on a weekly basis for 5 years they had accomplished something that Dr. Pero had never seen in all of his research.  Dr. Pero stated, “It is the only single event (chiropractic) that produces these types of changes in human beings.”

What does this mean to you?  It is simply one more example that the subluxation does much more than create bad backs, and that correction of such does so much more than just relieve pain.  That is why our goal is always complete subluxation correction, and the younger a person is when they start weekly chiropractic adjustments the more correction, and therefore less permanent damage, there will be.  The ideal patient is the newborn who is adjusted from birth on.  And while we can not undo all the damage that subluxation may have caused in you, we can move forward to a more wonderful and vibrant future where the innate intelligence of your body is able to express itself more fully so help you realize as much of your God given genetic potential as possible.

#1 The Silent Epidemic

2/27/2014

Every person who enters this office, and especially you, is subjected to a series of educational procedures to teach about the subluxation.  This is not done because it’s expedient, for it takes a great deal of time.  This is not done because it’s always welcome, for patients sometimes balk at having to sit at the computer one more time.  This is not done as a marketing tool, for my time and money might be better spent outside the office, rather than inside.  This is done for one reason and one reason only, because subluxation is the greatest, oldest, and most deadly epidemic ever documented on the face of our planet.  If you don’t understand that by now, I have not done my job as well as I would like and this essay is to fill in the gaps.

There have been many epidemics of fame through the years.  The black plague killed a third of the occupants of Europe.  The flu epidemic early in the 20th century resulted in the death of millions.  The polio epidemic lasted over 30 years and killed or disabled millions.  However, the subluxation epidemic has lasted since man was first born, afflicts everyone, and, believe it or not, is responsible for setting the stage for up to 95% of all diseases.

To some these may be a bold statement, but it is true and does require your attention.  Read on.

There is little argument in all the scientific and historical literature that subluxation has been present from the beginning.  Since man went through the birth canal and stood upright, effects of gravity have begun to erode the spine.  Falls, injuries, manual labor, and other stresses cause the spinal discs, ligaments, muscles, and tendons to stretch and tear, allowing vertebral misalignment and malfunction to occur.  This sometimes begins with the birth process, but certainly has happened many times by the time the teen years hit.  Virtually 100% of teenagers will have subluxation in their spine.  Subluxation IS NOT a condition of adulthood, it is just that in adulthood that most symptoms begin.  Subluxation IS a condition of childhood, and like it or not, that is just the way it is and all children should be checked for subluxation.  But let’s move on to the big issue.

Subluxation is responsible for up to 95% of all diseases.  Quite a statement, isn’t it?

I thought disease came from germs, you say.  The germ theory of disease.  Let’s get rid of this old wife’s tale first.  Yes, there are germs but they don’t cause disease.  All germs are opportunistic.  This means that in order for a germ to get hold of you, you have to be weakened in some way in the first place.  Researchers have taken mucous from the nose of people with colds and placed them directly on the mucous membranes of healthy people.  Only about 12% of the test subjects get a cold.  Why?  Because the other 78% are healthy!  They don’t have tissue cells in their body that are sick enough for the cold viruses to get a hold of.  In other words, you have to be sick first to get sick.  This is true.  To look at it in a different manner, rats don’t create a dump, they are attracted to the dump.  Germs do not create disease, they are attracted to diseased tissue.  If you are sick, you cannot blame your co-workers, it is your own fault.

So, if germs do not cause disease, what does?  What weakens the body to allow it to get sick?  The truth is that many things can weaken the body.  Continued exposure to toxic chemicals or continued exposure to excessive stress are two fairly common weakening agents.  Eating poor quality food, not getting enough quality rest, not getting enough quality exercise or entertaining too many negative thoughts and emotions can also weaken the body.  We need to attend to these things for the sake of our current and future health and well being.  However, there is a silent weakening agent and it is the subluxation.

The innate or inborn intelligence of the body knows exactly what to do every time with perfection to keep the body in balance and healthy.  When we have subluxation, the body no longer functions at 100%.  The cells that the pinched and/or irritated nerves travel to from the command centers of the brain cannot receive the proper information from the brain on what to do, how to function, or how to adapt to life’s stresses.  The cells become weak.  They are in a state of dis-ease.  If you have enough of these sick cells or have them for long enough period of time, dis-ease can become disease.  What kind of disease?  All kinds.

With the exception of genetic diseases, I cannot think of a disease that cannot result from subluxation.  One study by Henry Winsor, M.D. concluded that 95% of the 221 diseases he identified in 97 cadavers were traceable back to subluxation.  Another study by Ronald Pero, Ph.D. found that people who are adjusted regularly over a period of 5 years have an immune system that functions 200% better than very healthy test subjects, 300% better than average test subjects, and 400% better than subjects with cancer.  He said, “It is the only single event(chiropractic adjustments) that we have been able to find that produces these types of changes in human beings.”  The specific area of the immune system that he studied was that part that is related to cancer prevention.  So, as I say, from colds to cancer, the subluxation can play a decisive role in disease.

In conclusion, if you are interested in true health for yourself and your family, you must start with weekly life-giving subluxation check-ups and chiropractic adjustments.  Of course you have to eat well, get plenty of rest, have a good attitude, work on your relationships, exercise regularly and everything else you know you should be doing.  But if the spine and nerve system are off, or if your computer circuitry is crossed up, everything else is a distant second.  Remember, it is easier to prevent than to correct.  Don’t wait or don’t let your family wait for symptoms and disease to develop before starting chiropractic care.  Make an appointment for them to have their spine checked.  To correct the subluxation is to prevent the consequence of the subluxation

What Our Patients Have To Say

Yolanda wrote:

I used to suffer severe headaches and migraines on a daily basis, usually all day.  I managed to work in an office because I had to.  When I went home at the end of the day I would often close the shades and go to bed.  I could not plan weekend events because I simply never knew how I was going to feel tomorrow.  If there were a special event such as a birthday or wedding, I would begin to medicate myself two weeks in advance to give myself the best chance of making the event.
Friends and fellow church-goers had been trying to get me to see Dr. Rick for some time before I finally gave in.  Looking back, I don’t know why I waited.  Within a month, I was headache free.  I couldn’t remember what it was like to not feel pain.  I could do whatever I wanted and not live in fear of the headache.  This was a miracle for me, but the story does not end here.
An opportunity came up for us to adopt a newborn baby girl not long after I began chiropractic care.  This baby was particularly important to me and my husband because her mother is a relative.  Tragically, her mother was also a drug user and did drugs during her pregnancy.  If we could not adopt the baby she would have been put into the foster system since the biological mother was incapable of raising her.
To keep a long story short, we did adopt her and she is doing fantastically.  There is no sign of any effect of the drugs on her as of yet, and with God’s help, there never will be.  We think that is because of the vast amounts of love and attention she gets from us, her real mommy and daddy.
What does this have to do with chiropractic?  The reality is that without chiropractic, I would still be nearly an invalid with headaches.  I COULD NOT HAVE TAKEN CARE OF AN INFANT OR RAISED A YOUNG CHILD.  THEREFORE, SHE WOULD NOT HAVE ANY OF THE OPPORTUNITIES IN LIFE THAT MY HUSBAND AND I WILL BE ABLE TO PROVIDE FOR HER.  MY DAUGHTER’S LIFE IS POSSIBLE BECAUSE SOMEBODY MADE ME GO TO A CHIROPRACTOR.
You need to tell everyone you know what you know about chiropractic.  Who knows who’s life you will change too.
Andrew's mother, Barbara, wrote:

Hello, My name is Andrew and I am a happy, healthy one year old.  But I wasn’t so happy or healthy when I first met Dr. Rick a few months ago.  I had been having problems with my ears for four months, I couldn’t sleep at night and I was miserable.  We’d been to the doctor lots of times but nothing was helping.  In fact, all the medicines the doctor had tried seemed to make me worse instead of better!  Both the regular doctor and the Ear-Nose and Throat doctor said that if the antibiotics didn’t work, then they’d just have to put tubes in.  Now my Mom and dad weren’t about to let them do surgery on me, especially since they had been reading and learned that tubes can cause more problems than they solve.  My mom and dad did a lot of praying.  Then my mom heard that sometimes babies who have a traumatic birth like mine have ear trouble.  You see when I was born they used a vacuum extractor and forceps to pull me out.  I guess all that yanking on my head, hurt my neck.  She also heard that chiropractic care can be the answer.  Now she was skeptical because she couldn’t imagine a chiropractor helping ear infections!?!  But at that point she was willing to try anything!!  Happily, a few weeks of adjustments and my ears were all cleared up.  In addition, I no longer had a stiff neck or shoulders and my whole personality was happier.  I have to tell all babies who have ear troubles, don’t let them give you tubes until you at least try chiropractic care first.  After all, it can’t hurt and if you’re like me, you could be perfectly well with no drugs and no surgery.  In my family, we thank God for Dr. Rick, because I feel better, my mom and dad are happier and sometimes, I even sleep through the night.
