We have all heard of early warning systems. The U.S. military developed them during the cold war to warn us as soon as the Soviet Union launched nuclear missiles toward us. Your car is loaded with them to tell you as soon as something fails. Your computer will tell you, hopefully, as soon as it detects a virus in your system. Early warning systems do not prevent, they are there to minimize the damage or downtime. You might be surprised to learn that your body, unlike your car, does not have an early warning system. In fact it has a late warning system. This works to our advantage is some ways but not in others. Let’s take a look at this.
Unlike your car and your computer, your body has the ability to repair itself. It heals. It may sound simple but your body is the only thing that can heal your body. And your body knows this. So, when something goes wrong, it is assumed by the body that it can heal it on its own, without outside help. Therefore, alarms do not go off. All is quiet. And in fact more often than not your body does heal the problem without you ever knowing there was a problem. Wonderful! No down time and all is well. This is your late warning system at work.
But it’s not always a good thing. The classic examples would be heart disease or cancer. 30% of the time the first symptom of heart disease is sudden death. That’s probably a little too late of a warning. Most often cancer is well on the way before you ever feel anything at all. The assumption that your body will fix it in these cases is too often wrong. You might have guessed it but pain as a result of subluxation is also a classic example of a late warning system.
Abraham Towbin, M.D. estimated that 98% of spinal injuries throughout our lives go unnoticed with no symptoms. Yet in every case there will be some very minor or microscopic bleeding/swelling/scar tissue. The 98% that we don’t know about combined with the 2% that we do know about create more and more subluxation in the spine throughout a lifetime. No early warning. No pain. No symptoms. All’s well on the surface but danger lurks in the shadows. At some time in our life the alarm is triggered. We hurt. We may or may not seek help, often the wrong type, which further delays the right help. Subluxation correction can and should begin before the alert is sounded, before the pain, before our late warning system. This is why we offer wellness care for those that have little or no subluxation and reconstructive care for those that have subluxation with little or no pain, and of course initial intensive care for those who have waited until the late warning system has rung its bell.
