In 1902 the great Thomas Edison once predicted, “The doctor of the future will give no medicine, but will interest his patients in the care of the human frame, in diet, and in the cause and prevention of disease.” Chiropractic had begun a mere 7 years prior in Davenport Iowa and was a most fledgling profession at the time of Edison’s statement. It is extremely doubtful that Edison knew of chiropractic when he made this quote. Since that time chiropractic has grown to be the second largest primary health care profession in the world and the largest of the so-called holistic healing professions. There are more than 60,000 licensed chiropractors in the United States and we have spread all over the globe and most especially in the western countries.
We promote the care of the human frame or what we call subluxation correction. We give no medicine. We encourage a proper life-style so as to reduce your exposure to medicine throughout your life as well as to improve your quality and quantity of life. All disease is caused by the inability of your body to adapt to the environment. Subluxation interferes with your body’s ability to interpret and adapt on a moment by moment basis. If I were to change Edison’s quote I would state, “The doctor of the future will give no medicine, but will interest his patients in disease prevention through subluxation correction combined with diet and exercise.”
A t-shirt photographed and placed on Facebook sums up the alternative:
I take Aspirin for the headache caused by the Zyrtec I take for the hay fever I got from Relenza for the uneasy stomach from the Ritalin I take for the short attention span caused by the Scopederm Ts I take for the motion sickness I got from the Lomotil I take for the diarrhea caused by the Zenikal for the uncontrolled weight gain from the Paxil I take for the anxiety from Zocor I take for my high cholesterol because exercise, a good diet, and regular chiropractic care are just too much trouble.
