In this article I would like to define three words:
1) Wellness – The perfect state of balance in which all cells in the body are performing their individual functions in coordination with every other cell.
2) Health – The state in which disease is not present but may or may not be developing.
3) Disease – A medically recognizable state of extreme malfunction characterized by signs (what the doctor can see), and symptoms (what the patient can feel).
As discussed in a previous article, “How Sympathetic Are You?” I made the argument that if the sympathetic nerve system did not come from the spine but instead came straight from your skull that you would be healthier because spinal subluxation could not damage your health. But, as I was not consulted during our creation so we are stuck with this weakness. The facts are:
1) Half of the nerves that control ALL aspects of our health pass through the spine
2) Subluxation will damage these communication pathways
3) A loss of wellness will ALWAYS result.
If you remember the article, “The Wellness Numberline,” you will remember that true wellness is when every cell in your body is coordinated with every other cell through the communication system we call nerves. Among other things this requires a subluxation-free spine. While it is really impossible to measure wellness, it should still be your goal, to adopt a lifestyle that promotes wellness in your body. Why? Because being healthy is not good enough.
Let me explain. Disease is when one cell of your body malfunctions and becomes pathological. The question is what is the period of time between when one cell malfunctions and when you have signs and symptoms? That depends upon the disease and location. For some forms of cancer it could be years. Therefore, during that period of time you are considered healthy. Ironic isn’t it? Therefore, I view health as a temporary symptom and sign free period in which disease is developing. Once the disease pops up you go from being healthy to being sick, just like that. On average we will all die with 2 diseases. So while I know I will die, I don’t want to die of a disease. I’d rather my body just wear out. And to do that requires either great luck or a wellness approach.
I am not foolish enough to think that a perfect state of wellness can be achieved. We are perfect souls housed in imperfect bodies. But the more we strive for wellness the better chance we have of avoiding disease and delaying death and improving our quality of life. Wellness first requires us to be as subluxation-free as possible, and that’s just the beginning. It is work but one with a tremendous payoff. I hope you are working toward wellness now that you know that it is not good enough to just be healthy.
