Lethality is the measure of how deadly something is. As an example a bullet wound to the head is very lethal while a paper cut is not very. What I am going to discuss in this article is how and why I take the stand that subluxation is a lethal condition. It can be lethal either due to its effect on nerve function or due to inflammation or due to its effect on mobility.
The last effect is simpler so I will review it first. If you become disabled due to back pain, by far the most common cause of permanent disability by the way, you are forced into a sedentary lifestyle which will shorten your lifespan due to heart disease or stroke. Logic dictates that once you are disabled that is forever, so the only way to treat disability is to never become it. This means active work on your part to keep your spine healthy.
Inflammation is another lethal effect of subluxation. Briefly, subluxation is one of many things that results in inflammation within the body. Inflammation is now understood to be a significant cause of heart disease, cancer, asthma, and many other chronic diseases. More and more medical doctors are even testing for inflammation in the blood. The problem from their perspective is that there is no good prescription pill for inflammation. Exercise, diet, and as it turns out, subluxation reduction are keys to controlling inflammation within your body.
Now on to the most important lethal effect of subluxation, damage to the nerve system. Nearly all disease comes about as a result of your body being unable to properly adapt to environmental stress. As an example, cancer comes about as a result of mutation in the DNA. Mutation is when one small code in the DNA is changed incorrectly. Nearly all mutations are bad, and most result in damage or cell death, and some result in cancer. But your body has the ability to prevent and repair mutation. There are a number of systems set up for that including anti-oxidant chemicals to prevent mutation and genetic scissoring to repair it once mutation has occurred. This is why you should take more anti-oxidants including vitamin D3 and fish oils.
But there is more. A study of 104 chiropractic patients were compared to three other populations in their ability to prevent and repair genetic mutation. The first group were people who already had cancer. The second group were people without disease but otherwise did not live a health-oriented lifestyle. And the third group were people who were very health oriented in terms of activity level, diet, exercise, etc.
The results caused the study director to state, “This is the only single event that we have been able to find that produces these types of changes in human beings.” What he found is that the health-oriented group prevented/repaired mutation twice as good as the sick group. What this showed is that life-style effects mutation rate. But most astounding was the result that the chiropractic patient group scored twice that of the health-oriented group. This means that being subluxation-free was more important than other life-style changes in preventing/repairing mutation. And for these and other reasons, subluxation is lethal.
\os.Q8Res'> All disease results from the inability of the body to properly adapt to environmental stresses. So, if the first goal of treatment is complete healing, we know that that is not possible with joints for the reasons stated above. Therefore, the next goal of treatment is to stop or slow the progression. That is exactly what reconstructive care is trying to do through ongoing adjustments to the damaged joints. You should know I am terrified of the progressive and degenerative nature of subluxation in my own spine. I have been disabled by it in the past. This is at least partly why my office is dedicated to reconstructive care of the subluxation.
However, the lay person does not usually understand the progressive and degenerative nature of the subluxation and that there is treatment beyond symptom control. And unfortunately too often chiropractors do not tell their patients this information. And how can we make good health decisions with incomplete information? This is why we use the computer programs and why we de-emphasize symptoms and why I write these articles and why we push reconstructive care and why I adjust most children for free. This is why this office is here. Thanks for being part of it.
